Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ about homelessness and helping people who you see are homeless

There is a person sleeping outside and I want to help.  What should I do?

Please have him/her call Allegheny Links at 1-866-730-2368.  That is the best first step for a person who is homeless to get connected to the resources he/she needs.  If the person would like to talk with someone in person, please direct him/her to the Mission located at 10 E. North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

What do I do about people asking for money to eat?

We suggest you do not offer to cash to those who are panhandling.  It is entirely up to you, but be advised that this money can be used to purchase items you might not want to provide to the individual such as drugs or alcohol.

Light of Life serves breakfast and dinner 365 days a year, so you are welcome to direct the person to the Mission, located at 10 E. North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

FAQ about addiction and recovery

What is detox verses rehab?

  • Detox is a 72 hour process. It is done in a medically supervised environment such as a hospital and is intended to help the individual through initial withdrawal of the drug in a safe environment.
  • Rehab is the step after detox, and typically takes 28 to 30 days.  This step in the recovery process is intended to give the individual the tools to stay clean from drugs and alcohol. Generally, these programs are designed around the 12-step process.  They also help the individual create a plan in which they can remain clean and sober after they leave the facility.

What comes after rehab?

Some individuals can stay on track after rehab, by utilizing support systems such as AA or NA which are group meetings designed to support people at all levels of recovery.   Others need a longer-term recovery environment.  Light of Life Rescue Mission has recovery programs for single men, single women and women with children.  Not all but most of the clients in our programs have experienced long term addiction and are in need of a supportive, sober environment where they can begin to explore the issues in their life that have led to addiction, and often, homelessness.  There are other residential programs available.  We can share these resources with you, along with the Allegheny LINK system phone number.
