Everyone leaves something behind
whether it’s a lot or just a little. And regardless of the amount, we all try leave something of value to our loved ones and to the charities we hold close to our hearts.
Leaving a part of your estate to a favorite charity—like Light of Life—can not only maximize what your family members receive, but continue to support causes that have special meaning to you.

You can give a gift twice using the same asset—even with a modest estate—by establishing a Testamentary Trust. That’s what Annie, a retired school administrator, did.
Without dividing her belongings, Annie passed along the $200,000 value of her estate to her grandchildren and to the school to which she devoted her life’s work. She accomplished this by arranging for her asset to be transferred to a trust upon her death. The trust document instructed the trustee to invest the assets and pay all the income and gains to her family until $200,000 of the income was paid out. At that point, the $200,000 trust principal was distributed to the school.
With this plan, Annie’s family received a flow of income rather than the principal. This solution helped her grandchildren manage their money more efficiently.
Like Annie, many parents share a concern about passing large sums of money to their children/grandchildren. If you are one of them, a testa-mentary trust might work for you. (See column at left for other ways you can help your family and continue to support organizations like Light of Life.)
